Dilation and Curettage

Dilation & Curettage (D&C)

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure performed to scrape and collect endometrium from inside the uterus.  This procedure involves the dilation (widening or opening) of the cervix to allow instruments into the uterus, and the surgical removal of uterine tissue by scraping (curettage) the uterine walls.  This process can be performed using a local anesthetic. Dilation and Curettage

Dilation and curettage may be implemented for various gynecological reasons and may be utilized to:

  • Diagnose uterine cancer
  • Treat abnormal/heavy uterine bleeding
  • Remove any retained tissue in the case of a miscarriage
  • Further investigate infertility
  • Perform an abortion
  • Diagnose and/or treat other gynecological issues (i.e. endometrial polyps, embedded IUD, postmenopausal bleeding, etc.)

Patients that have additional questions or concerns pertaining to dilation and curettage should consult with their health care provider.
