Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a radiological procedure performed to investigate and examine the uterine shape and cavity while also ascertaining the patency of the fallopian tubes.HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAM (HSG) In short, a hysterosalpingogram is an x-ray exam of a woman’s uterus and fallopian tubes and is an important diagnostic procedure in determining female fertility potential.

HSG uses a special form of x-ray called fluoroscopy and a contrast material (dye).  The procedure involves the injection of radio-opaque material (dye) into the cervical canal (to outline and fill the fallopian tubes and uterus) while fluoroscopy is used to view and assess the patient’s anatomy and organ function while they are in motion.  A series of x-rays are taken as the dye passes through the uterus and fallopian tubes.  These x-rays allow physicians to observe whether any defects, abnormalities, injuries, tubal ruptures, or tubal blockages are present that may be preventing conception.

HSG is a vital diagnostic tool and is essential to the initial work-up and treatment process for infertility patients.  Women with additional questions or concerns pertaining to HSG should consult with their health care provider.
