Abnormal or Irregular Bleeding
Many women experience abnormal vaginal bleeding or have unusually heavy or long menstrual cycles.
Vaginal bleeding is considered abnormal:
There is a wide range of possible causes for abnormal vaginal bleeding. In the case of heavy and/or frequent bleeding, possible causes include: fibroids, uterine polyps, infection of the pelvic organs (vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries), cervical cancer, hormonal abnormalities, bleeding disorders, certain birth control methods (i.e. IUD and birth control pills), endometrial hyperplasia or cancer. Heavy bleeding should always be investigated and evaluated by a physician. The specific evaluation needed depends on the particular issue, age, and history of the patient. Minimally, the patient will undergo a pelvic exam and Pap test. She may also be tested for various infections and be given an ultrasound. Furthermore, if the patient is over the age of 35, she may need an endometrial biopsy.
Treatment of abnormal or irregular vaginal bleeding depends on the specific diagnosis. If cancer or infection has been ruled out during the initial evaluation, the physician will endeavor to control/regulate the bleeding with medications or simple procedures.
