Basic Fertility Counseling

Basic Fertility Counseling

Infertility refers to the biological inability of a man or a woman to contribute to conception.Basic Fertility Counseling Infertility occurs when a couple has actively tried to conceive for 12 months without success.  There are many biological causes of infertility, some which may be circumvented via medical intervention.  A health care provider can assist an infertile patient by doing a basic infertility work up and implementing a treatment plan.  This may include an evaluation of the patient’s medical history, a physical exam, a pelvic exam, hormone assessment, possible blood work, and/or imaging studies.  A comprehensive assessment of infertility can be discussed with the health care provider.

Infertility is a medical condition that may affect all aspects of a woman’s life and especially her emotional well-being.  It can affect the patient’s relationships, life perspective, and self-image.  Many women find themselves overwhelmed when dealing with these feelings alone.  Feelings and issues such as anxiety, depression, feeling “stuck,” fixation on one’s infertility, relationship problems, and having these emotions interfere with the patient’s normal life activities are signs that the patient may want to consider counselling.  Patients facing infertility often seek out the professional support of medical caregivers and mental health experts.  Women considering infertility treatment options (such as IVF, gestational carriers, egg donation, sperm donation, or embryo donation) can find it exceptionally helpful to obtain the assistance of a fertility counselor.

Women who decide to seek assistance in managing the emotional stresses associated with fertility treatment can find the appropriate counselling and support via multiple sources.  These include support groups, supportive friends or family members, books, couples counselling (i.e. marriage or family therapists), individual therapy (i.e. psychologists or psychiatrists), etc.  Talking with experienced professionals may help patients find the solutions they need both emotionally and physically.  Finding the best options for support may involve asking a health care provider for referrals to the appropriate mental health care professionals.  Patients may further ask their doctor for resources, information, and guidance pertaining to fertility related matters.
