Pre-pregnancy visits and counseling revolve around the optimization of the patient’s body and health prior to pregnancy. This is also known as preconception care which is key in achieving the ideal conditions needed to conceive. The patient’s goal is to become the healthiest version of herself both emotionally and physically, and to explore or assess any potential medical issues or risks to her or her future baby.
Preconception counseling is an aspect of family planning available to women who feel ready to conceive. These counseling visits between patient and doctor involve an in-depth discussion about the patient’s individual medical history, family medical history, surgical history, menstrual history, reproductive history (past pregnancies), contraceptive methods/current medications, overall gynecological health (i.e. STDs, past abnormal PAPs or infections), physical health & weight, home & work environment, and personal habits (i.e. smoking, alcohol consumption, drug use, caffeine). The physician might also want to discuss the patient’s lifestyle and may make specific recommendations pertaining to the patient’s diet, exercise, and vitamin supplements. For instance, the doctor will likely recommend that a perspective mother get the optimal amount of folic acid (400 mcg/per day), calcium, and other nutrients, as well as taking prenatal vitamins. Other topics of discussion may involve the patient’s menstrual cycle and ovulation to determine optimal days during the month in which she may conceive.
In addition to these conversation topics, the health care provider may also choose to perform a physical examination, pelvic exam, PAP test, and possibly a blood test. The preconception appointment is a wonderful time for the patient to pepper the doctor with any and all questions and concerns she may have pertaining to pregnancy. Women can feel prepared and ready for the journey that lies ahead by discussing these issues with their health care provider during the preconception visit.
