Labor & Delivery Care
Every patient’s labor and delivery experience is uniquely her own and an adventure different from any others. It is important for patients to formulate a birth plan outlining personal preferences and expectations prior to delivery.
Discussing the plan and preferences in advance with the health care provider ensures that everyone is on the same page. The OB/GYN performs delivery as closely as possible to the patient’s preferred birth plan. However, patients should try to remain flexible in their desires. Delivery does not always go exactly according to plan and can sometimes take surprising twists or turns. The most important priority is the health and safety of infant and patient. Options and preferences for pain management during labor, as well as the patient’s feelings about episiotomy (an incision to widen the vaginal opening to make it easier for the infant’s head to pass through) or other procedures (i.e. an unexpected cesarean birth) should also be thoroughly discussed with the doctor. The doctor’s job is to educate patients, as well as provide them with the tools to manage their own labor so that they may embrace the entire experience.
The goal is to achieve a safe delivery resulting in a rewarding and memorable experience for all. Patients can look forward to warm, experienced, professional care when welcoming their baby into the world. It is the greatest honor and privilege to care for a patient’s needs during this special time.
