Adolescent Gynecology
Teen visits to a gynecologist can be nerve wracking and uncomfortable during the early years of puberty. It is crucial to handle these young patients with the utmost sensitivity and care so that a foundation of trust and ease is established right from the start. Girls should have their initial gynecological visit between the ages of 13 and 15. In many cases, this first visit may only include a conversation (involving no pelvic exam) that allows patient and physician to get to know each other. This conversation also allows the doctor to learn about the patient’s medical history and allows for basic education on topics such as menstrual periods, Pap smears, and/or the HPV vaccine (Gardasil).
During the patient’s teens, visits to the gynecologist should primarily focus on preventative measures including: first exams/education, assistance with any menstrual issues/PMS, annual gynecological exams, attention to common gynecological problems, information/treatment for STDs, Pap smears, cancer screening, and breast exams. Annual teen gynecological exams may also include testing and counselling for HPV, HIV, and/or appropriate contraception depending on the situation.
