Colposcopy
Colposcopy is a medical diagnostic procedure that allows physicians to examine a magnified view of the cervix, tissues of the vagina, and vulva. This allows doctors to visually distinguish abnormal from normal appearing tissue and to determine if a biopsy is needed for further pathological analysis.
It is commonly performed as a follow-up procedure when a patient has abnormal PAP smear results. Many pre-cancerous and malignant lesions have distinct visual characteristics that can be seen via colposcopy. The principal objective of this procedure is to detect precancerous lesions or HPV early enough to treat them, thus preventing the developmental progression to cervical cancer. Colposcopy is a commonly practiced procedure that is effective and very safe. Patients with additional questions or concerns pertaining to colposcopy should consult with their health care provider.
