Endometrial Ablation
Endometrial ablation is a procedure that eliminates or ablates a thin layer of the uterine lining (or endometrium). The procedure is used to treat women who are experiencing abnormally heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding. This procedure is performed by inserting an instrument, through the cervix into the uterus, and applying heat to thermally destroy the uterine lining. The endometrium heals itself by scarring after the treatment, which results in the reduction or removal of uterine bleeding. It is done on patients who don’t plan to have children in the future and offers an alternative for women that do not wish to have a hysterectomy to control their bleeding.
Endometrial ablation can be performed using a wide range of techniques:
Endometrial ablation is highly effective and approximately 90% of the patients who have the procedure have reduced menstrual bleeding. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis or in the physician’s office under local anesthesia. Patients with additional questions or concerns pertaining to endometrial ablation should consult with their health care provider.
