Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)
Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is used to treat abnormal cells that have been detected on the surface of the cervix. Should a patient receive abnormal PAP results, the physician may perform a colposcopic biopsy that confirms the presence of pre-malignant cervical cells. LEEP is often the follow-up procedure used to remove these pre-cancerous cells to prevent the development of cervical cancer. This minor surgical procedure involves the use of wire loops that are attached to an electrosurgical generator. The wire loops cut away the abnormal tissue causing the cells to heat and burst. The removed abnormal cells are then sent to a lab for further pathological evaluation.
The procedure is performed in an office setting and typically takes 20-30 minutes to complete. Patients with additional questions or concerns pertaining to LEEP should consult with their health care provider.
